 Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition

Connecting faith and life is more than a motto; it is the vision that drives all that we do.

While many people look to the government or the business world to chart the course through uncertain economic downturns, we choose to look to God and His Word for solutions. We believe that the local church is the Body of Christ?God's redemptive agent bringing help and hope in troubled times. The Church is the Light of the World (Matthew 5:14-16) and shines brightest in darkest hours. The Church is uniquely empowered and positioned to offer more than just spiritual solutions to spiritual problems, but also practical solutions to practical problems.

More than 1 in 9 adults in White County, GA, are unemployed. Many businesses or individuals who have jobs that need to be done lack the financial resources to cover the cost of labor. We realize as well that some of those who are unemployed lack the knowledge, experience, character, or work ethic to keep a job once they are hired.

The Bridge Church's "Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition" is designed to help. Here's how it works:

STEP ONE: Charitable Donations

The Bridge Church receives charitable donations for our Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition from church members and attenders, as well as from individuals and businesses within the community and surrounding areas. In most cases, donations will be 100% tax deductible.

You can donate online by clicking HERE  - be sure to indicate your donation is fo Extreme Makeover Jobs.

STEP TWO: Application Process

A) Individuals needing work submit an Employment Needed application to The Bridge Church. Volunteers will be available upon request to help the job seeker fill in these applications. Before beginning work, the individual will be required to take instruction on improving his or her employability, and agree to standards of character, work ethic, and conduct on the job.

B) Individuals and organizations that have work to be done but that lack the finances to pay for labor costs should submit a completed Labor Request form to The Bridge Church. The request form should give details of the job, skills required, approximate hours needed to complete the job, days/times the worker is needed, and list of supplies needed or provided. Jobs may be a one-time opportunity requiring only a few hours, short-term requiring several hours over several days, or extended-term lasting several weeks or months.

Contact The Bridge Church to request an Employment Needed Application or Labor Request Form. info@TheBridgeOnline.cc  706-219-2857.

STEP THREE: Networking

Volunteer staff members will review the applications and requests and match workers to jobs. References listed on the worker's application will be verified, and background checks will be conducted by The Bridge Church, if needed. Once a potential match is made, the staff member will notify the individual or business owner and provide a copy of the potential worker's application. If the individual or business owner approves, their name and contact information will be given to the potential worker. It will be the worker's responsibility to contact the individual or business owner to discuss details of the work to be done.

The number of workers and the number of jobs to be performed may be limited based on several factors: available workers who submit applications, number of jobs listed by individuals and businesses, funds available in the Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition fund. The Bridge Church cannot guarantee that there will be job opportunities, workers available, or funds for payment of services.

STEP FOUR: Work Performed and Reviewed

The worker will perform the job and provide the job provider with a time sheet and a Confidential Performance Review form that must be completed, signed, and returned to The Bridge Church by the job provider immediately following the completion of the work, or at the end of each week for those jobs that extend beyond a few days. Workers will not receive payment until the completed Confidential Performance Review is received by The Bridge.

STEP FIVE: Payment

Workers will be compensated $8 per hour for the work performed. Workers are considered independent contractors and will be issued IRS 1099 forms unless a W-2 is required by law. If a W-2 is required, necessary taxes will be withheld as required by law.

STEP SIX: Mentoring and Coaching

Applications and Confidential Performance Reviews will be reviewed by a group of experienced business men and women who have volunteered to provide personal mentoring and vocational coaching covering resume preparation, basic job skills, character assessment, work ethic, and job performance review.

Real People
with Real Needs
Finding Real Hope

A grandmother is sleeping on a couch at a relative's house, while her son and daughter-in-law are staying in the mold-infested basement of another relative's home with their 1-year-old son. They have no usable water, and a septic system that backs up. All three family members are looking everywhere for work.

A man and his wife are struggling to provide for themselves and their 10-year old son. The man has worked as a plumber's helper, electronics technician, and doing odd jobs, while his wife is recovering from surgery after totaling their only vehicle.

A single mother of four, recently divorced from a husband in the military, is desperately trying to transition from being a stay-at-home mom and wife with no job experience to a working mom providing for her family. She hopes to find weekend work so friends and neighbors can watch her children.

A single father was recently given custody of his children despite being out of work since 2008. His job skills and previous experience include carpentry, land surveying, fireworks, and poultry. He is a hard worker, and working hard to maintain his dignity and hope as he continues to look for long-term employment.

A single grandmother shares a hotel room with her adult son and daughter-in-law and their 1-year-old and newborn baby after being evicted. They are barely surviving on the grandmother's disability income. The husband has a variety of handyman and carpentry skills and is eager to work but is repeatedly rejected, most likely because he stutters. His wife is also looking for work.

A mother and father of four are struggling to live off his meager disability income. She has an accounting degree and is looking to work as an accountant, bookkeeper, waitress, cashier, maid.even doing yard work. One problem: She has a felony conviction and needs a chance to start over and rebuild her life in a new direction.

A single mom making just enough from her job to provide for herself and her kids has a leaking roof in dire need of repair. She cannot afford the cost of repair, and turned to us for help. Contributions made to the Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition are being used to hire an unemployed roofer to do the job, while the donors receive a tax deduction for their charitable contribution.

A man with years of experience painting, installing drywall, and providing general maintenance for hotels, but out of work for months and sleeping on the floor of a friend's house, was referred to this program. He began work immediately, earning a fair wage for his hours of work. He proved to be dependable and hard working, gaining the attention of several people in our church because of the excellent quality of his work. Within days he had several job offers that will likely carry him into next year.
